Familiar Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 2, 2026

Familiar is an Android app that uses AI to perform tasks on your device on your behalf. This policy explains what data Familiar collects, how it is used, and your choices.

Data we collect

When you use Familiar, the following data may be collected and processed:

  • Commands you issue (typed or spoken). If you grant microphone access, Familiar uses two layers of speech recognition. Wake-word detection ("Hey Familiar") runs entirely on-device — that audio is never transmitted. Once triggered, Familiar uses Android's built-in speech recognizer (provided by Google on most devices) to transcribe your spoken command; that audio is handled by the system speech-recognition service per its own terms.
  • On-screen text during a task. While a task is running, Familiar reads the text shown on the active screen on-device to follow a preset routine — matching buttons, fields, and labels. The contents of intermediate screens are not sent off-device. When a task finishes, a snapshot of the final screen is sent to our backend so we can verify the task succeeded. If a routine extracts a specific piece of text (e.g. an estimated arrival time), that value is included in the task log. Familiar reads only text — it does not capture screenshots, images, or other visual content. Text on the screen may include personal information depending on which app is active.
  • Installed-app list. When you issue a command, the list of apps installed on your device is sent to our backend so the planner can choose a routine that uses an app you actually have.
  • Account identity. If you sign in with Google, we receive your Google account email and a unique identifier solely to authenticate you to our backend.
  • Task logs. A log of each task (commands, planner decisions, actions taken, errors) is generated locally and may be uploaded to our backend for debugging and quality improvement.

We do not access the system contacts list, SMS, call logs, location, photos, or files outside what appears on screen during an active task, and we do not collect any data when no task is running. Contact names you add yourself in Familiar's Settings are sent with each command so the planner can match names you say to the right contact; these are not pulled from your Android contacts.

How data is used

  • Sent to AI providers. Your command text, the list of apps installed on your device, and any contact names you've added in Settings are sent to our backend, which forwards them to one or more AI model providers to plan the task. The final screen at the end of a task is sent for verification. Providers may include commercial AI services (such as OpenAI or Anthropic) and open-source models we host or operate. The specific provider used for a given task may change over time as we evaluate and improve the service. Each provider's data handling is governed by their own terms; commercial providers' terms are linked from their respective websites.
  • Stored on our backend. Logs are stored in Google Cloud (Firebase / Cloud Storage) under our project, used only by the Familiar developer for debugging and improvement.
  • Not sold or shared with third parties for advertising or marketing.

Your controls

  • Familiar only reads on-screen text while a task is active, and only sends data off-device for commands you initiate. You can stop a task at any time.
  • You can revoke accessibility permission in Android Settings → Accessibility at any time, which fully disables the app's screen reading.
  • You can revoke microphone permission in Android Settings → Apps → Familiar.
  • To request deletion of your account or stored logs, contact us at the email below.

Children

Familiar is not directed to children under 13.

Changes

We may update this policy. Material changes will be reflected by an updated date at the top.
